Sam Lanham

Dr. Sam Lanham has been a friend and supporter of Logan Library since his days as a student at Schreiner. An avid researcher and collector of the Republic of Texas, Texas during the Civil War, and the Texas Hill Country history, he has assisted Logan Library’s development of its Hill Country Special Collection. It is thanks to Lanham’s generosity that the library owns many rare and important documents of the history of this area. His gifts are providing the majority of the items made available in our Digital Library and his encouragement and continuing assistance have been a major component of our efforts thus far. We are honored to name the site for him.
Dr. Lanham has had many "lives." Earning his J.D. from Baylor University Law School, he entered private practice in Waco, Texas, and served as an adjunct professor of law at Baylor and at the University of Texas Law School. Later, Lanham returned to school, earning his M.Div. at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and followed that calling to serve as a parish minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and as an adjunct faculty member at the Austin Seminary. He returned to Schreiner as a professor of Interdisciplinary and Legal Studies, retiring in 1997.
"Retired" for Sam simply means "I can do whatever I want" and what he wants varies from continuing his research to making books and jewelry to learning the ancient art of knot tying to investigating African-American-Texas folklore. We are happy that one other activity he wants to do is to help with the Digital Library.
